Happy New Year, Newburgh families!


We hope that you have spent some time over the past couple of weeks relaxing and connecting with close family. We recognize that the Ministry announcement made just after the break began has probably caused some anxiety, but rest assured that we are here to help make the transition to remote learning as smooth as possible. We all hope that this period of learning from home will be short and that we can get back to face to face instruction at the school in the relatively near future. Currently, students are scheduled to return to the school building on January 11, 2021. Please continue to monitor the media, the LDSB website and our school website to stay up to date on any new developments.


For the week of January 4-8, 2021, students will be participating in a remote learning program involving a combination of asynchronous (independent learning) and synchronous (live online learning) learning opportunities led by your child(ren)’s class teachers. The priorities for Monday/Tuesday  (January 4th & 5th) are as follows:


  1. Connect with all families – You should expect your child’s class teacher to make contact with you and/or your child by the end of the day on Monday January 4th, 2021. Teachers will be able to provide more specific programming information related to your child’s learning plan at this time. Please monitor your personal e-mail accounts (addresses provided to the school), your child’s Google Classroom and phone messages for this contact. If you have not heard from someone at the school by the end of the day Monday, please contact the school office by phone. Administration and office administrators will be working in the building all week during regular school hours.
  2. Asynchronous learning activities will be provided online via the learning platform established by your child’s classroom teacher (e.g., Google Classroom) 
  3. Device distribution – At the beginning of the school year, all families were surveyed regarding their technological needs to help us prepare in the event that we had to make a move to remote learning. We have started to organize all of our devices and will be distributing technology to those children who do not have access to an appropriate learning device on Tuesday January 5th, 2021 according to the following schedule:


Morning Distribution

9:00-9:30     – JK/SK

9:30-10:00   – Grade 1/2

10:00-10:30 – Grade 2/3

10:30-11:00 – Grade 4/5

11:00-11:30 – Grade 6/7

11:30-12:00 – Grade 7/8


Afternoon Distribution

12:30-1:00    - JK/SK

1:00-1:30      - Grade 1/2

1:30-2:00      - Grade 2/3

2:00-2:30      - Grade 4/5

2:30-3:00      - Grade 6/7

3:00-3:30      - Grade 7/8


Please come to the front door of the school during one of the above time periods allocated to your child's class and a staff member will be happy to help you. Families will be attended to one at a time so we would ask that all waiting individuals stand, properly distanced and wearing masks, just outside the door as we serve each person in turn. Families with more than one child at the school and in more than one class may choose from the available time slots depending on which would be most convenient for you. Please limit the number of people standing in line to one, if possible.


We are aware that there are families who have connectivity issues which will have an impact on their child’s capacity to participate in the learning program. We are waiting for more information regarding these accommodations and will be in touch with the relevant families as soon as possible.

As we move towards the latter half of the week, the learning program will pivot to more of a combination model (synchronous/asynchronous) that will resemble a typical school day. Teachers will provide students with a timetable which will outline expectations. The timetable will roughly follow the regular school day with opportunities for both synchronous and asynchronous learning.


It is important to note that attendance will be taken over the week and that all students will be expected to participate in learning over the entire day. We are aware that this will be a challenging time for many families. If you experience any issues related to participation, please do not hesitate to consult with your child’s teacher or contact the school.
