Allergy Alert

Allergy Alert
Posted on 09/03/2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:

This is to inform you that we have students and/or staff in Newburgh Public School classrooms who have severe, life-threatening allergy(ies) to peanuts, tree nuts and shellfish.

Severe allergic reactions are often associated with foods, the most common being peanuts, nuts, milk, eggs, soya, fish and shellfish.  They can also be associated with bee stings and medications such as penicillin.  Allergic reactions can be so severe that eating, or even inhaling trace amounts of the foods to which they are allergic to may trigger a life- threatening reaction. Prompt emergency treatment is required.

A ll of us must do all that is required to provide these school members with a safe environment. We therefore respectfully ask that you discuss this situation with your child. Please explain the importance of washing hands before and after meals, of not sharing foods, and if a food allergic child becomes ill, to seek help immediately.

In addition, the school plans to put in place the following routines and procedures to protect these students:

Parents/Guardians are asked to not send food items that contain peanuts, tree nuts or shellfish.  Please remind your children that pack their own lunch to respect the health and safety of their anaphylactic classmates.

Students will regularly review safety practices at lunch and snack times. All students are expected to show respect and care towards all students in the classroom during lunch and snack times.

If you require more information or clarification, please do not hesitate to call.

Your cooperation in this matter is deeply appreciated. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Peter Mouncey

Principal, Newburgh Public School
